A need is identified through a reputable source such as a school nurse, physician, social service agent, or clergy member. Verified requests may also be made here. Womenade board members are contacted immediately, the request is discussed and, if approved, funds are dispersed directly to the collecting agent, usually in just a few days.
Womenade is able to provide financial help in amounts up to $500. We are hesitant to provide specific criteria for the types of things that "qualify" for our assistance because we want to be as flexible and effective as possible. A request might be "something that other agencies can't provide" or the need is immediate and waiting because of paperwork or bureaucracy will hurt the client. We are not a long-term solution. We fulfill short-term needs that may make a difference in the quality of a person or family's life or their ability to stay on top of basic needs. We want to help take care of our neighbors, friends, and their children. It really is about pooling local resources to help local people.
Today, this "simple" idea has spread throughout the country and here in the Seacoast. Oyster River Womenade followed this formula and have now successfully raised money for countless families; helping with financial issues that range from medical care to paying for a new pair of shoes.
The unique appeal of Womenade is its ability to mold to the local and individual aspects of the community. There is no national organization guiding our mission, no memberships are required. It really is about using local resources to help local people. The only guiding principle being: one neighbor helping another builds a stronger community.
